With the 19th pick in the 2016 NFL draft Rex Ryan dug into his Clemson connection to draft Shaq Lawson, DE/OLB. The 6’3, 270 pounder from South Carolina had 25.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks on the year. While some have concerns about his balky shoulder and the production perhaps being that of a “one hit wonder”, watching Lawson he plays with a power not too dissimilar from an old Rex Ryan favorite, Terrell Suggs. In the Bills’ defense, he would play in the role vacated by Mario Williams – opposite Hughes with his hand in the dirt and occasionally standing up and rushing from a ‘backer spot.
The way the draft fell for Buffalo, they could have traded down, which I was pushing for. But, Doug Whaley in the post draft mentioned that the value of players at the spots they could’ve traded to compared to Lawson was too great a distance and here we are.
We’ll be back tonight with best players remaining for the Bills, as well as thoughts on the 1st round overall.
I scouted Shaq for Building the Herd – which you can read here.
