Once the Colts and the Saints advanced to this year’s Super Bowl, I was positive we were in for a repeat of Super Bowl XXIX… and then it was announced Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney has a bad ankle that might prevent him from playing and will definitely hurt his effectiveness.
Now I don’t know what I think. Freeney is that good, that important. With him 100 percent healthy, the Colts destroy the Saints. It’s no contest. Oh, the Saints might be able to hang for a half, but eventually the Colts would take control and win Sunday’s game by two touchdowns.
Now? Anything is possible. Maybe Drew Brees can match Peyton Manning touchdown for touchdown.
Manning and the Indy offense get so much hype and attention that we lose sight of the fact the Indy defense has been pretty remarkable. And it all starts with Freeney’s ability to rush the passer and disrupt the opposition’s running game in the backfield.
