Roster Update: The victim of the 25 man shuffle, Nick Hagadone has drawn the short straw as the man to be sent down to bring Trevor Bauer back to the team, just for one game. After starting game one, Bauer will be sent back to Columbus before the start of game two, when Matt Langwell will be activated for the second time this year. Most likely, Hagadone will then be reactivated once his 10 days are up.
Player of the Game
There were plenty of choices for today's player of the game, but Ryan Raburn beat all comers, knocking in four runs and scoring twice in Cleveland's 19 run onslaught. His final POG score was 7.75. Jason Kipnis had an exemplary game as well, as he was safe his first six times to the plate with three walks and three doubles. He knocked in two and scored four times for a POG score of 7.05.
Trevor Bauer's POG score of -9.36 gives him the second worst game of the season, just behind out Corey Kluber's start on May 10th when he allowed 8 runs in four innings. It was also enough to negate his two good games in a row, giving him an season total of -1.3.
Feathers Up
The Indians didn't take long to respond to a horrendous first inning. The Tribe scored five of their own in the second to tie the game. The offensive attack started with two outs (like always) when Mike Aviles, Drew Stubbs, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jason Kipnis and Nick Swisher all had consecutive hits. Aviles double was a lucky drop, but each hit after that was a solid drive to the outfield, especially Kipnis' shot which hit off the top of the wall in centerfield. Both starting pitchers had left the game before the bottom of the third inning.
After coming back in the second, the Indians loaded the bases with one out in both the third and fourth innings. In the third they were shut down by reliever Brian Omogrosso, but in the fourth it was Omogrosso who loaded the bases then allowed two runs to come home, giving the Indians the lead. Ryan Raburn hit a single up the middle to bring the runners home. The Indians put together a few more hits and brought home four more runs in the inning to put the Sox behind by six.
The Indians first two offensive outbursts were a little too slow developing, so in the fifth inning, they moved faster with Kipnis, Swisher, Yan Gomes and Chisenhall all doubled to score three more runs. Robin Ventura had left in Omogrosso through this point, despite giving up nine runs in just over two innings pitched.
Feathers Down
This wasn't the showcase start for Trevor Bauer that he may have wanted it to be. Things never came together for Bauer who let the first two batters of the game reach and score on an Adam Dunn home run. Jeff Keppinger then hit a meaty pitch over the fence in left with two outs. Bauer didn't record another out, but did allow another run to score on two more hits, a walk and a hit batter. Hit main fault was generally that the strikes he threw had far too much of the plate and when he tried to work the edges of the zone, the ball was so far outside the strike zone that the batter didn't have to think about swinging. The Indians would have been better today if they had just started Matt Albers from the beginning.
With a nine run lead, the Indians still had some issues in the fifth inning as Bryan Shaw had difficulty finding the strike zone. He walked two batters in the inning and gave up a single to left to allow a run, forcing him to be taken out earlier than Terry Francona had originally planned. On the hit to left, Mike Aviles decided to throw home and threw it to the backstop in the air, allowing the two runners on base to advance. Cody Allen then gave up a home run to Tyler Flowers on his first pitch in the game to bring the game within five.
