Yan Gomes had the Indians’ only extra-base hits of the game and the only hit that put the Tribe on the board. Details are below.
Feathers Up
Yan Gomes blasted a solo homerun in the top of the 7th to cut the Tigers lead to three at 4-1 at that point. It was also Gomes’ second hit of the game which also included a double in the 5th. The double was the first hit off of Drew Smyly in the game. The homerun was also the Indians MLB leading high 21st hit in July.
It took reliever Austin Adams only three pitches to dispose of Miguel Cabrera in the bottom of the seventh. All fastballs on the inner half of the plate. In fact, Adams needed only 8 pitches to breeze through Austin Jackson, Ian Kinsler and Cabrera in the inning. His ERA had dropped from 81.00 to 20.25 before giving up a run in the eighth.
Feathers Down
The Indians failed to complete the four game sweep this weekend in Michigan. The bats went silent as Tigers starter Smyly held the Tribe hitless through 4 1/3.
Josh Tomlin made a few mistakes in the strike zone, particularly to Torii Hunter in the fourth. With a runner on, he threw a two-strike curve ball which Hunter sat on and hit over the left-field wall for a homerun. Tomlin had recorded the first two outs of the inning.
The offense was stagnant to say the least. They mustered only four hits with two of them coming off the bat of Gomes.

On Deck: The Indians will travel to Minneapolis to take on the Twins starting tomorrow evening to begin a three game series. There will be roster moves before both tomorrow and Tuesday’s games as Terry Francona has noted that T.J. House (Columbus) will start the first game and Danny Salazar (Columbus) will start the second. Trevor Bauer will get the nod in the third and final game on Wednesday afternoon.
