7/31 Recap: Mariners Attack Zach, Win Series

Roster Update: The trade deadline was today at 4 PM and the Indians were not silent this season. After Justin Masterson was traded to the Cardinals yesterday, Asdrubal Cabrera was moved to the Nationals today in exchange for minor league infielder, Zach Walters. Both Masterson and Cabrera will be free agents by the end of the season and the Indians were unlikely to offer qualifying offers to either, so this was the only way to get some compensation for either play. In place of Cabrera, Austin Adams has been called up from AAA.

Player of the Game
Jason Kipnis started the game off with a double, scoring the Tribe’s first run afterward on a Michael Brantley single, then brought home the Indians next two with a two run home run in the third.

Feathers Up
Despite falling down three runs by the third, the Indians immediately came back, powered by a Jason Kipnis two run home run. The game stayed tied until the seventh when Jose Ramirez, Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana all reached base safely to push across another run.

Feathers Down
A day after dealing Justin Masterson and after losing out on the John Lackey sweepstakes, Zach McAllister showcased the Indians lack of top pitching depth. Against the M’s, he gave up four runs in the first three innings and was pulled after giving up a single in the fourth. The majority of the damage happened in the third, when he gave up a two run home run to Dustin Ackley as part of four consecutive Seattle hits.

It was a rare poor performance by the Indians bullpen that cost the Tribe the game, although they can’t be faulted too much after their extended duty. This time, it was Bryan Shaw who walked Kyle Seager and gave up a game winning two run home run to Mike Zunino, a Ruthian slugger against the Tribe.

Starting left fielder, Chris Dickerson, left the game before his first at bat with knee discomfort. He was replaced in the field with Mike Aviles and should be considered day-to-day.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 5 – Seattle Mariners 6

On Deck: The Indians and Rangers have a Friday night battle set to include fire works and dollar dogs. Danny Salazar is set to start against Jerome Williams.
