9/9 Recap: Poor Inning Costs Bauer & Tribe Series Opener

Roster Update: In an unusual move, the Indians have sent outfielder Chris Dickerson down to AAA, despite the fact that rosters have expanded and the Clippers are done playing baseball for the year. Dickerson had helped the team a lot over the past few months, playing above average defense on a very poor defensive team and starting in left field much of the time Michael Bourn was out with injury.

Player of the Game
Yan Gomes was responsible for two of the Indians three runs tonight and their only real attempt at a comeback. Down by two in the eighth with two outs and Carlos Santana on third, Gomes was able to hit a line drive single to center to bring Santana home. Earlier on, he had a sacrifice fly for the second run of the game as well with a couple of outs sandwiched in between for a 1/3 night and a 2.65 POG score.

Feathers Up
Lonnie Chisenhall may have knocked in all four of the Indians runs over the past two games to that point in the second, but it wouldn’t have happened with out a great set-up by Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis. Santana singled over the shift to lead off the inning, then Kipnis doubled him to third after a tremendous at bat. Chisenhall brought the first run home after knocking in all three yesterday with a ground out to the right side that moved Kipnis to third as well. Yan Gomes capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to deep right that brought home Kipnis to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead.

Despite, the note below, Trevor Bauer pitched well all night. Outside of the four batters to hit safely with two outs in the fourth, no other Twins batter reached base via the hit all night against Bauer and only two others did with a walk and a hit batter. Since Bauer picked off Jordan Schafer after walking him to start the game, he allowed just five batters over the minimum through his eight innings pitched while striking out eight.

Feathers Down
Trevor Bauer didn’t allow a hit through the first 11 batters of the game, but with two outs in the fourth, gave up four in a row leading to four runs. It seemed he had gotten past his big inning issues that appeared in the first in his last start, but once things started, Bauer just couldn’t shut it down. Joe Mauer doubled with two outs to start things off, then came home on another two base hit by Kennys Vargas. Trevor Plouffe singled home Vargas on a hard hit shot down between third and short, followed by a two run Oswaldo Arcia home run to cap things off.

While the leader of the Central Division may change tonight, it is looking less and less like the third place team ever will. The Indians were given a great chance to make a move with Detroit and Kansas City playing each other, but by losing the first two games this week, they have almost completely squandered it. Most estimates have the Central Division winner and Wild Card winner both having at least 89 wins, so the Indians can afford to lose just about four more games all season. If they can sweep both the Tigers and Royals in their seven games against the divisional foes, they could mount a comeback, but after scoring just three against the Twins, it hardly seems likely.
