6/28 Game 2 Recap: Toru Leaves Early, Bullpen Doesn’t Save the Day

Player of the Game

Another scoreless game leads to another reliever winning the Player of the Game. This time, the lucky recipient is Cody Allen, who struck out all three batters faced in a perfect seventh inning. Props also go to David Murphy and Roberto Perez, who never gave up despite the score and went 7/8 combined with two doubles.

Feathers Up

Austin Adams neared placing his name in the record books for his inning tonight as he struck out the first two batters, walked one, struck out another, then walked one more to load the bases. That is not a typo. Adams’ second K was David Lough, who reached on a wild pitch. He nearly tied the MLB record of four strike outs in an inning, but was able to strand all three runners with a Chris Davis pop out, leaving the inning scoreless, a feat in itself for the Indians today.

Milestone Alert: During a losing streak, even closers need to get some time in and by making an appearance today, Cody Allen moved to 40th in Indians history in games pitched. With 212, he is now tied with Mike Jackson and is well on his way to becoming one of the most used pitchers in Indians history.

Feathers Down

The Major League debut for Tribe pitcher Toru Murata was far from superior. The 30-year-old managed to pitch a total of 3.1 innings, leaving the game with a 4 run deficit. To his credit, however, the first 2 Baltimore runs scored were unearned after Jason Kipnis botched a routine ground ball in the 2nd. Prior to exiting early in the 4th, Murata gave up 2 solo shots in the inning and walked a batter, which would later come around to score. His final line was 3.1 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, and 3 earned runs allowed.

The 4th inning did not get any easier after Murata’s early departure. Mark Rzepczynski recorded an out and walked a batter before being pulled from the game. Ryan Webb was brought in to record the final out in the inning, but prior to achieving that feat, Webb gave up a double, which scored both base runners left by Murata and Rzepcynski. He then gave up a 2-run home run before recording a strike out to end the inning. Going into the fifth inning, the Tribe offense found themselves down by 8 runs.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 0  Baltimore Orioles 8

On Deck: Staying in the American League East, the Indians will next travel to Florida for four against the Tampa Bay Rays. The first will take place Monday night at 7:10 PM and will feature Cody Anderson in his second start after shutting out the Rays through 7.2 innings in his Major League debut.
