Player of the Game
Josh Tomlin was fantastic at the plate and on the mound tonight. He nearly singlehandedly beat the Reds.
Feathers Up
The Indians drew first blood in the 4th inning with a 2-run rocket to right by Carlos Santana, his 6th home run of the season. He would hit his 7th the very next inning, also a 2-run shot.
Josh Tomlin was once again solid for the Tribe, turning in another yeoman’s effort on the mound and at the plate. He pitched 7.2 innings, striking out 7 batters while allowing just 2 runs. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a run scored. The run scored came in the top of the 5th just after the Reds had tied the game at 2, Tomlin led the inning off with a double and then scored on Rajai Davis‘ double to put the Indians back on top.
Rajai Davis was the Indians best hitter in the Battle for Ohio, a series that saw plenty of offense. Davis finished 2 for 4 tonight with 2 doubles, a run scored, and a stolen base. For the series he was 9 for 16 with 9 batted in and 10 runs scored.
Feathers Down
There really wasn’t much that went wrong in tonight’s game. Though it doesn’t feel right for me not to mention that Tomlin gave up another home run tonight. He has allowed 8 home runs in 7 starts this season. Tomlin has done well in all of those starts so it hasn’t hurt the Indians so far, but it’s worrisome that this continues to be a problem.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 7 – Cincinnati Reds 2
On Deck: The Indians travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox in a 3 game set. Corey Kluber will take the mound against a struggling Clay Buchholz. The Red Sox hitters have been red hot this season and Kluber will look to keep the Indians’ 4-game winning streak alive.
