Catcher had been one of the Indians organization weaknesses. With Yan Gomes entrenched at starter and Roberto Perez (when healthy) as a big leaguer now, the next closest exciting name is Francisco Mejia (Lake County) and a number of other guys with some potential throughout. But the Indians hope that taking Oregon State catcher Logan Ice addresses the issue, after drafting him with the 72 overall pick in the draft, their final pick on day one.
Ice was lauded for his defensive abilities, throwing out 48% of attempted base stealers in his three years as a Beaver. After physically getting stronger this season, Ice’s bat caught up to the defense, hitting .310 and walking 37 times compared to 25 strikeouts, which was one of the things that led scouts to put teams on notice about him.
The 21 year old right handed hitting catcher’s defense might be his carrying tool and most consider his bat solid if nothing else. At the moment, he fits somewhere in the conversation of the Indians catching prospects probably below Mejia and along with Simeon Lucas.
