Roster Update: After allowing seven runs in his last two innings, Zach McAllister was placed on the 15 Day DL today with right hip discomfort. It’s possible that this injury effected his control in his past few outings as it was far worse than his normal. In addition, Mike Clevinger was sent back to AAA to return to the rotation after a short stint with the MLB bullpen. Replacing the two relievers will be Austin Adams, his second tour with the team this year, and Joseph Colon who is set to make his Major League debut after a long and arduous journey through the minors.

The Indians drafted Colon in 2009 and after resigning as a free agent during the past off-season and serving two drug suspensions, the 26 year old has finally earned a chance with a 0.59 ERA in 15.1 innings.

Player of the Game

Jason Kipnis was involved in both of the Indians run scoring innings, hitting a double and single on the night and scoring two runs. Tyler Naquin also had a great game with a home run, double and steal.

Feathers Up

With Marco Estrada of the Blue Jays being placed on the DL, he needed a replacement on the All-Star team and that man is Corey Kluber. This gives the Indians three All-Stars along with Francisco Lindor and Danny Salazar. It was also announced that AAA third baseman/outfielder Yandy Diaz will be an injury replacement for the Futures Game.

The Indians scored first tonight, taking Ivan Nova deep twice in the third. Tyler Naquin lead off the inning with his eighth home run of the season (his minor league high in a single season was 10 in 2013 between A+ Carolina and AA Akron), then after two strike outs, Jason Kipnis hit another solo shot. This was his 12th of the year, just five away from his all time high in 2013 with nearly half the season left.

The Tribe put together a bit of a rally in the sixth to shrink the deficit. Carlos Santana lead off with a double, then Jason Kipnis just got one by a diving Jacoby Ellsbury for a double of his own. Santana scored and Kipnis moved up on a wild pitch, then Kipnis came home on a Mike Napoli ground out to third to bring the game to within one.

Milestone Alert: Cody Allen‘s 36th appearance of the season was the 286th in his career. Why is this a special number? Because it ties him with Hall of Famer Addie Joss for the 25th most used pitcher in Indians history.

Feathers Down

Trevor Bauer brought a no hitter into the fourth, but in the fifth he looked like a completely different pitcher. Didi Gregorious started off the rally with a solo home run after which the Yankees hit consecutive singles. With two outs, Bauer gave up another hit to Brett Gardner, scoring Chase Headley from second with the tying run. Bauer worked around Carlos Beltran then was able to retire Brian McCann to end the inning. In the sixth, Bauer gave up three straight hits again and a sacrifice fly to bring home two more runs and end his night after 5.2 innings. One more of Bauer’s runners scored off T.J. House bringing his total to five runs allowed on eight hits and two walks.

The “If Only” play of the game today belongs to Abraham Almonte, who pinch hit for Chris Gimenez in the seventh with Naquin on second. Naquin had singled and stole the base with two outs and extremely tough righty Dellin Betances on the mound. Almonte struck out swinging, but the ball got away from McCann and, if only Almonte had ran to first, Naquin would have scored the game tying run. Instead, he waited at the plate before getting started and was thrown out to complete the K.

The Indians nearly completed the impressive feat of scoring a run off the back end of the Yankees bullpen, but couldn’t quite get it done. Against the 101 MPH fast balls and slow sliders of Aroldis Chapman, Napoli walked and Juan Uribe, pinch hitting for Lonnie Chisenhall, hit a single to left. It appeared that Naquin loaded the bases with an infield single, but replay review overturned the call at first and ended the game.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 4 – New York Yankees 5

On Deck: Game two of four of the Indians against the Yankees will take place tomorrow night again at 7:10 PM. Newly named All-Star Corey Kluber will pitch against rookie starter Chad Green.
