4.How will the wide receiver position shake out? Truthfully, this may not be decided until the preseason and really, it’s not as teeth-gnashing an issue as some observers have made it out to be. With WR Anthony Gonzalez returning from a knee injury, an already deep WR position will be getting deeper, with Gonzalez joining four-time Pro Bowl selection Reggie Wayne, third-year veteran Pierre Garcon and second-year veteran Austin Collie. Wayne remains one of the NFL’s elite receivers, and Garcon showed signs of developing into a big-time, big-play receiver last season. Collie showed solid production in the slot, and his seven touchdowns receiving were a significant number for a rookie. Where does Gonzalez fit in this scheme? One theory is he will compete with Garcon on the outside, and some believe he could return to the slot, the position for which he originally was drafted. The Colts believe in getting their best players on the field, and with Garcon showing such potential as a big-play threat, that could mean Gonzalez playing the slot and putting three receivers – Gonzalez, Wayne and Garcon – capable of creating a big, down-the-field play. The bottom line is while this has been seen as a worrisome issue by some the Colts enter the OTA period with perhaps the deepest core of receivers in the NFL, and the return of Gonzalez gives the Colts one more big-time element in an offense that already includes as much talent as any in the NFL.
