<![CDATA[LouFest is back and better than even in 2014.
We know you. You're lazy. Very lazy, actually.
So besides OutKast and a few others, you probably don't know what all the excitement is about. So just like high school, we did your homework for you.
We've ranked the top 20 bands you should be excited to see. Given you a few one-liners and nuggets of information to help convince your friends that you need to be buying tickets right now.
And also included a Spotify playlist at the bottom of all these words that way you can just skip reading and press play. If you haven’t already quit on this post.
Here we go…
1. OutKast. They’re hitting the festival circuit hard in 2014 after a 10 year live performance absence. If you don’t like OutKast, please leave the country.
2. Kelis. You know Kelis from 1 of 2 things. Milkshakes bringing all the boys to the yard. Or marrying Nas. Her latest album released this month (“Food”) is one of the best of 2014.
3. Trombone Shorty. You can not have a good time if you can not have a good time listening to Trombone Shorty.
4. Cherub. Probably shouldn’t be this high on the list. But listen to ‘Doses & Mimosas’ and tell me who should be higher?
5. Cake. More good songs than you remember. Bonus points for album cover art consistency over a long career.
6. Arctic Monkeys. I’m pretty sure that anyone who has ever picked up a guitar has had a wet dream about the riff on ‘Do I Wanna Know’.
7. Grouplove. They’ve had songs featured in Apple commercials, Glee, Madden and in NASCAR’s soundtrack.
8. Portugal. The Man. For those of you on drugs: you’re going to like this show.
9. Matt & Kim. For those of you on drugs, but are generally happy: you’re going to like this show.
10. Future Islands. Fun fact? The band made their network television debut on March 3, 2014, on The Late Show with David Letterman. Did Dave ponder retirement during their time on stage? We’ll NEVER KNOW.
11. The 1975. Any rock band that can get radio airplay with such thick accents has to be good, right? We’ll go with that.
12. Empires. You like your Michael Buble a bit more dramatic and sultry? In fact, this might just be a hammered Buble side project.
13. Kopecky Family Band. Great festival band. You want to lose yourself in the music? Go ahead! You want to have a conversation with a friend with a nice background soundtrack? Go ahead!
14. Vintage Trouble. Only this far down the list because they’ll be scheduled during the day. This kind of music isn’t fully appreciated in daylight.
15. Washed Out. So, the best Wikipedia opening ever? “Washed Out was born Ernest Greene on October 3, 1982 in Perry, Georgia. After earning an undergraduate degree from the The University of Georgia, Greene obtained a Master of Library and Information Science degree but was unable to find a job as a librarian.”
16. Lettuce. Jethro Tull would love Lettuce. So would Ron Burgundy.
17. Those Darlins. Apropos of nothing, girls with tat sleeves are generally awesome.
18. RAC. Now depending on what RAC plays, this could be a top 7 show at LouFest. they create re-interpretative remixes. What the hell does that mean? According to them: “RAC strives to maintain a style of remixing that strays from the “club mix” archetype, creating new incarnations of songs that stem from the original structure, but expand on their genre and musical arrangement.” So, um. Yeah.
19. Blackberry Smoke. If you have one friend that only likes country music and you’re trying to convince them to branch out? Same goes for your friend that loves Kid Rock.
20. Young & Sick. If you’re still living with your parents, put on ‘Mangrove’ and tell mom & pop you’re going to see these guys. They’ll be believing you’re moving out any day now.
