News came out this weekend and the Cardinals made it official today… the US Women’s National Team will play a tune-up to the Women’s World Cup at Busch Stadium on Saturday April 4th.
Yes, we’re talking about soccer.
The relevant portions of the press release before we get to the sad news:
The St. Louis Cardinals announced that the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (U.S. WNT), in its first domestic game of 2015, will play the New Zealand National Soccer Team in a match at Busch Stadium on Saturday, April 4th at 2:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.
Any St. Louisans?
The WNT’s first home game of 2015 prior to the FIFA Women’s World Cup could feature two St. Louis natives in defenders Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Chalupny.
Don’t forget Hope Solo. She isn’t from here, but is familiar with the city. Ticket info?
The match marks the third soccer match at Busch Stadium and the first involving a U.S. National Team, as well as the first women’s game. Tickets to the match, which start at $25 for field box level seats, will go on sale to the general public on Friday, January 30th at 10 a.m. at cardinals.com/soccer, ussoccer.com, the Busch Stadium box office and 314.345.9000. A special pre-sale for Cardinals season ticket holders and club VIPs will begin on Wednesday, January 28th.
Great.
Go. Support team USA. It’s the only soccer match the women’s team will play in the general area prior to this summer’s World Cup and also a big time match for the players trying to make the final roster for said Cup.
This game, unlike the others played at Busch MEANS something. Quite a bit actually. But…
The Cardinals plan to use only the lower section of Busch Stadium for the match, which would make the capacity around 23,000.
Really?
And we want the MLS to take St. Louis seriously as a city that deserves a franchise? The Cardinals can draw 45K people to a Wednesday ‘businessman’s special’, but St. Louis can’t fill up Busch for a Saturday game with our national team?
I’d love for the city to prove the Cardinals wrong and sell that game out. Let’s go, STL.
You’ll never be this close to Alex Morgan again!
