The Story Of Mitch Harris

Mitch Harris will have a jersey, number 73 to be exact, hanging in a locker at Roger Dean Stadium when pitchers and catchers report for spring training next week.

Harris is one of 18 non-roster invitees that have been invited to practice with the Cardinals major league team.

Unlike every single one of his teammates, Harris is the only one to graduate from the United States Naval Academy.

“It’s a heck of a story,” said Mike Shildt, who was Harris’ manager last season at Double-A Springfield (Missouri). “Now effectively it has gone past the point where it is more of a novelty. He’s carved out an opportunity for himself, and I couldn’t be more excited for him.

Rob Rains over at Bleacher Report has the full background on how one of the best feel-good stories of the season is starting to take shape with Harris.

Candidly, it’s going to be a real long shot for Harris to make the MLB roster out of camp. But if he does well and gets himself some exposure to the MLB coaching staff, he might just get a call up to St. Louis during the 2015 season.

I think the producer of the FSN ‘This One’s For You‘ game just passed out.
