TLR Can’t Quit STL; LaRussa To Attend Cardinals Opening Day

Wow.

Kind of like an open marriage, who are we to judge. If everyone’s happy with the arrangement, then everyone’s happy with the arrangement.

Haven’t you heard? Tony LaRussa is coming back for Opening Day on Monday.

And no, the Cardinals aren’t playing against his current employer, the Arizona Diamondbacks. They’ll be in San Diego playing the Padres.

Here’s an executive summary:

1) TLR is employed by the AZ Diamondbacks to try and figure out ways to beat every other team in MLB, including the St. Louis Cardinals. They give him money to do this.

2) TLR should absolutely be celebrated by the Cardinals and St. Louis… after he’s stopped accepting money to try and beat them.

3) This is weird.

Let’s cover some responses to this:

The D-Backs play at night on the west coast, he can still make it back for their game.

So your wife/husband can go hang out with their ex all day because you won’t be back from work until late? That’s cool?

He’s one of the all time Cardinals greats and a HOFer, he should be celebrated.

It’s true, having all the living HOFers come out for Opening Day is one of the coolest moments each spring. He should be offered the opportunity to participate.

Sorry for all the relationship metaphors, but even if you had a really good breakup with your ex and wanted to extend them a courtesy invite to your wedding, you’d expect them to decline.

Hate to bring up old wounds… but he wasn’t all that committed to the Cardinals when he was inducted to the HOF, so it’s hard to say now that this is something that can’t be missed for a few seasons while he’s employed elsewhere.

Why do you care?

I don’t so much care as just think this is really an odd/unprecedented situation that no one else seems to think is weird.

As far as I can tell no one has attempted to ask TLR or Cards management about this unique arrangement. And if someone has, please post the link in the comments below.
