It’s the time of year when you start checking off teams.
The Cardinals and Rockies will not play again in 2015, finishing the season series with 4 wins and 3 losses on the ledger for St. Louis. With a current record of 44-59 the Rockies will not be participating in postseason baseball, disappointing fans of both Nolan Arenado and beards.
By taking 3/4 over the weekend, the Cardinals maintained a 5.5 game lead in the toughest division in baseball and notched their 40th home win against only 16 losses.
The new guy chipped in, too.
With 57 games to play, the Cardinals are in prime position this week to build a chip stack that Pittsburgh won’t be able to overcome.
The Cardinals head to Cincinnati (47-56) and Milwaukee (44-62) for 6 games. These are two teams that have indicated to their current players that they won’t be terribly disappointed with better draft positions in 2016 *wink*.
The Brewers responded by losing 4 straight to the Cubs. The Reds? By fighting.
With the start of NFL training camps and the resurgence of the Mets hogging all the national attention, the Cardinals will be flying way under the radar this coming week.
But by taking 4 or 5 wins down, they’ll not only move over 70 for the season, but put some distance in between themselves and the Pirates – who happen to have 6 games versus the Cubs and Dodgers lined up.
And who knows, maybe the time away from Busch will even energize the fan base who got shouted down by Rockies fans on Sunday afternoon:
