Here’s Jason Heyward’s line so for 2015:
.293 BA | .350 OPB | .445 SLG | .795 OPS | 11 HR | 50 RBI | 131 H in 447 AB
His oWAR is 3.0 and his WAR is 4.6. If you go by the baseline (and yes, I know this is way more complicated) of 5M/WAR point, then Jason Heyward is having a 23M season while the Cardinals actually pay him 4.5M.
Bottom line? Heyward is KILLING it in a free agency year. Even if you believe he should hit for more power, the acquisition of Heyward has been great for the team.
Further, the Cardinals are in rarefied air when it comes to team performance. A win tonight against the Nationals and the Birds will be 40 games over .500 before Labor Day. They are on pace to have the 2nd most wins in team history.
Heyward is a part of this success.
Then again, he’s not the only reason for the success.
Therein lies the problem. How much do the Cardinals want to pay to find out how much Heyward means to the club?
Let’s be honest here… if the team didn’t think they had any shot of keeping Heyward longer than one season, they wouldn’t have given up Shelby Miller in the trade that brought him here.
But now that they’re about to pay a steep tax on their capital gain, just how deep is Mr. DeWitt willing to dig into his pocketbook?
Time will tell. But at this very moment, where do you stand?
