A Loss Won’t Kill The Cardinals; Losses Will

Trust me, I know.

The Cubs have started this season on an absolute tear. And have already pushed the Cardinals into a 3 game hole in the NL Central.

After the Reds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first last night, the Cubs proceeded to pound out 9 runs over the next four innings and teach the Reds a lesson heading into their forthcoming sweep tonight.

Couple that with last night’s loss to the Brewers? You know, the particularly sloppy affair with Matt Holliday looking like what anyone that hasn’t been following the Cardinals this spring and just found out he’s playing 1st base thought he would look like playing 1st base?

The one where Rosey showed us that his definition of ‘location’ is a bit different than ours? Or where Mike Leake lived up to his name?

Panic, right? I think it’s time to start the panic?

Deep breaths.

It’s easy to forget, but the math in baseball is simple… win most of your series and you’re in the playoffs.

162/3 = 54.

54 x 2 = 108.

108 wins gets you into the playoffs.

Of course you’re not going to win every series. And sometimes (like the first series against Pittsburgh) you’re going to get swept. But you’re also going to do some sweeping (like against Atlanta).

A win today and the Cardinals have won the series. and will have won 2 out of 3 series to start the season. So while hanging the L isn’t ideal, it’s also not going to kill a team unless you string those L’s together.

Win series. Make the playoffs. The math is simple.

We only have one day to enjoy it, so let’s enjoy it:
