Georgia Spring Practice: Who’s Making Noise?

As we await the Georgia spring game let’s take a look at some guys that are making some noise this spring (in a good way).

Ben Jones, C, Senior

One of the things most sorely missing from the 2010 version of the Georgia Bulldogs was leadership. It sounds like Ben Jones is stepping up and grabbing one of those positions on this team. After the offense got dominated in a practice last week, Ben Jones lit into the offense. In Aaron Murray’s words “just screaming, yelling, pushing, going crazy, being Ben Jones…you don’t want to mess up if Ben Jones is watching you.” Jones has spoken about being a senior and not wanting to waste his senior year. Sounds like he’s off to a good start.

Caleb King, RB, Senior

This quote from a recent Mark Weiszer article is what I like to hear…

“Caleb’s been practicing very well,” Richt said. “It seems like he’s really practicing with a really great focus and a physical attitude. He seems to be in pretty good condition. Every time he makes a run of late, he pops up and sprints back to the huddle. He’s trying to play and practice with a lot of energy.”

Coming out of High School, King was rated by scout.com as a 5-star prospect and ranked 4th among his RB class (behind Joe McKnight, Marc Tyler and Noah Devine and ahead of LeSean McCoy, Jonathan Dwyer and Chris Rainey). King admits he came to campus with the wrong attitude and says that he’s working hard this year and is ready for a breakout season.

Kwame Geathers, DT, Soph

Big JUCO DT John Jenkins will be on campus soon but Kwame Geathers is putting up a fight for the starting nose tackle position. Geathers is drawing rave reviews from ILB’s Christian Robinson and Alec Ogletree as they singled him out after this weekend scrimmage for his good play. Richt noted that he’s making “very good improvement”. Geathers has bought into Joe T’s new strength and conditioning program and is up to 344 lbs and says that the weight he gained is muscle and that his body fat went down. If he can make an impact this year it would be great to have two nose tackles that can disrupt the line of scrimmage and stop the run.

Michael Bennett, WR, RS Fresh

With the departure of A.J. Green and Kris Durham the WR corps are in need of an infusion of talent. Tavarres King is firmly planted as the flanker to replace Green but the other position is wide open as is additional playing time behind King and in multiple receiver sets. Bennett is one of the guys that Richt singled out for his performance in last weekend’s scrimmage and he’s a guy that Green and Durham singled out for his performance last year in practice. Here’s another quote I’ll borrow from Mark Weiszer…

“I want to make a big contribution to the team”, Bennett said. “I’m really getting in the film room and working my butt off to learn every position and make some plays.”

It’s just spring but I like the overall attitude coming out of Athens so far. Let’s hope the hard work and positive attitudes will translate onto the field this fall.
