It was recently announced that new Georgia LB Jarvis Jones was cleared by the SEC and the NCAA of any rules violations. Jones was being investigated of receiving air fare to and from Los Angeles while he was playing for the USC Trojans. The ruling was made because Jones and his legal guardian had a long-standing prior existing relationship with the individual in question. You know, I think I read that somewhere else way back in June when this story broke. This is one of those times that I am proud to say “I told you so”. After making an “existing relationship” arguement in that piece I added “I would find it hard for the NCAA to come down on Jones in this situation. Georgia will no doubt investigate this further and report their findings to the SEC and from first glance this looks damaging but I think Jarvis will come out of this ok and without missing any time.” I don’t toot my own horn much but I’m glad to say that I was right in this situation.
The real shocker in this case was how quickly the NCAA moved and that’s a credit to the UGA staff and the SEC. The staff did a great job putting it’s case together and making it air tight so the NCAA had no choice but to rule in favor of the Dawgs. Instead of waiting around like we did last year to find out what would happen to AJ Green, we now know that Jarvis Jones will be starting at strong-side OLB this fall and that makes this Bulldog very happy. Jones should bring a new dimension to this position for Georgia this year as he replaces Cornelius Washington. Washington is a converted DE who will be much more in his comfort zone playing weak-side OLB this season. Jones will bring speed, strength and big hits to this defense. The addition of him and Alec Ogletree to the LB corps will be huge in adding a play-making presence to this Bulldogs defense. Let’s get ready for some football!
