I got invited earlier this summer to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:
The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.
We are honored to be asked to vote on this award alongside such great bloggers like Patrick Johnson from Big East Coast Bias, the guys from the Upset Blog, the Navy Bird Dog, and Kevin McGuire of the National Football Examiner (and virtually every other college football blog on the internet) among others. Here is what the group came up with in terms of pre-season picks. Here is my week one ballot based on on field performance:
1. Shea McClellin, DE, Boise State
Boise State beat Georgia because their DL beat Georgia’s OL in the trenches and McClellin was the leader with 2.5 sacks. If I could give the entire Boise DL this award I would.
2. Chandler Harnish, QB, Northern Illinois
He only threw 12 passes but 5 of them connected for TDs as NIU bombed Army. Oh yeah, he also ran for 80 yards and a TD.
3. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
I think this award should actually go to the Boise State OL as they did an excellent job in pass protection and gave Moore the opportunity to sit back in the pocket and go where he wanted with the ball without pressure in the second half. Moore finished with only six incompletions and 3 TDs in a big game atmosphere.
4. Lance Lewis, WR, East Carolina
The Pirates were having their way with the Gamecocks early and Lewis was a big part of that. 13 receptions for over 100 yards and 2 TD.
5. Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii
Not the best passing game for Moniz but he led his squad to a victory over Pac-12 newcomer Colorado in the debut for the Buffaloes new coach. Moniz was 20 of 33 for 178 and 1 TD through the air but it was on the ground that he did his damage as he ran for 121 yards and 3 TD.He surpassed both his 2009 and 2010 yearly rushing totals in one game.
