Detmer Award Week Five Ballot

I got invited earlier this summer to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:

The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.

We are honored to be asked to vote on this award alongside such great bloggers like Patrick Johnson from Big East Coast Bias, the guys from the Upset Blog, the Navy Bird Dog, and Kevin McGuire of the National Football Examiner (and virtually every other college football blog on the internet) among others. Here is what the group came up with for week five as well as the cumulative results (let’s just say Case Keenum is in hot pursuit of the current leader).

Here is my week five ballot based on game performance and remember, this is a week by week voting. We are not voting on their cumulative play for the entire season. Points are given each week and the one with the most points at the end of the year will get the award.

#1 Alex Carder, QB, Western Michigan– I said this was a potential upset to watch out for and I didn’t lie. Carder led the Broncos (3-2) over UConn 38-31. He threw for 479 yards and 5 TDs (including 3 in the 4th quarter).

#2 J.J. McDermott, QB, SMU– led SMU past TCU by going 23/45 for 349 with 4 TDs. This was a big upset and the biggest win I can remember for the 4-1 Mustangs.

#3 Case Keenum, QB, Houston– Keenum is on the verge of breaking records and he kept on plugging away against UTEP with  471 yds and 2 TD. Houston is now 5-0 and there is no loss in sight for the Cougars.

#4 Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii– Passed for 410 yards and 4 TD over a Louisiana Tech team that is better than their record indicates.

#5 Tim Jefferson, QB, Air Force– put his team over the top with a QB keeper in OT to help his team beat rival Navy 35-34 despite losing an 18 pt lead earlier in the game. Jefferson led the Falcons to victory with a rushing TD and two more passing. He had 60 yards on the ground and went 9/10 for 136 through the air.
