Detmer Award: Week Thirteen Ballot

I got invited earlier this year to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:

The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.

We are honored to be asked to vote on this award alongside such great bloggers like Patrick Johnson from Big East Coast Bias, the guys from the Upset Blog, the Navy Bird Dog, and Kevin McGuire of the National Football Examiner (and virtually every other college football blog on the internet) among others. Here is my week twelve ballot from last week. Here are the cumulative results for the entire year from the group (and this weeks ballots from everybody involved). Here is my week thirteen ballot based on game performance and remember, this is a week by week voting. We are not voting on their cumulative play for the entire season. Points are given each week and the one with the most points at the end of the year will get the award. Feel free to chime in with who you would have voted for based on last weeks performance…

#1 Case Keenum, QB, Houston- Houston was supposed to get a stiff challenge from Tulsa. At least that’s why I thought. It was a four point game in the third until Houston scored four unanswered TDs to win going away 48-16. Keenum tossed 5 TD versus 0 INTs and passed for 457 yards. Not bad considering this was probably Houston’s biggest game to date.

#2 Tyler Van Tubbergen, QB, Western Michigan- No Alex Carder (out with a separated shoulder)? No problem! Van Tubbergen only passed for 252 yards on 19 of 21 and only threw 6 TDs. He also had 60 yards rushing and a TD on the ground. Not bad for a back-up.

#3 Latavius Murray, RB, UCF- It was too little too late as far as their season goes but Latavius Murray broke through in this game for 233 yards and 2 TD on the ground. Oh yeah, he also caught 2 passes and took one of those in for a score. UCF ended up 5-7 on the season but they did keep UTEP out of a bowl by beating them this weekend.

#4 Bobby Rainey, RB, Western Kentucky- Rainey was an absolute workhorse for WKU as he ran the ball 43 times for 227 yards and 3 TD in their win over Troy 41-18. I don’t know anyone who saw that score coming at the beginning of the year.

#5 Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple- Pierce had 3 second half TDs and rumbled for 189 yards in a Temple victory that should have them bowling this year after being left on the outside looking in last year.
