Last week we started up our off-season roundtables by discussing new coaches, National Championship long-shots and teams that might be ripe for a fall from the top. This week I decided to split up the questions into three different posts over the weekend so the topics don’t get lost in the shuffle. You think Texas misses this guy?
QUESTION: What do you think is the most interesting position battle in the country this off-season?
Jay: For the second year in a row, I think the quarterback derby at Texas is among the most interesting off-season story lines. The Longhorns have just about everything else they need in order to be the championship contenders they were up until the moment Colt McCoy got his funny bone tapped by Marcell Dareus. Except somebody who can throw the ball. I’m interested to see if Case McCoy or David Ashe can take the next step in their development to at least be serviceable “game managers,” or if we’ll be witness to another inexplicably average Texas team. Seriously, guys, you’re the top program in one of the biggest, most talent rich states in the country. How do you not have a good quarterback?
Pete: The quarterback controversy at Notre Dame is one of my favorite spring/summer amusements. Who will it be this season: Tommy Rees, Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson or Gunner Kiel?
Ross: LSU QB. They were good quarterback play away from a national title last year and with so much returning talent in 2012, it’s not much of a stretch to say that good quarterback play could again determine whether or not they win the SEC and/or a national championship. Given how uninspiring Jefferson and Lee were last year, it doesn’t necessarily speak well of the guys who are back this year but couldn’t beat out those a year ago. But whoever emerges there is going to need to take a leap forward for LSU to live up to its prodigious potential next year.
Kevin: Looks like we are 100% QB focused on this topic! I will say that as a Georgia fan, I’m very interested in the RB competition this spring. I already touched on that here, so I will go with another QB battle being waged in the SEC. I’m going with the Florida Gators QB battle. It should be a two guy race between sophomores Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel. In a battle at running back, if you don’t win you are still going to get touches but in a QB battle once you lose you might never get another snap. More and more frequently we are seeing guys transfer if they lose the spring battle so this could develop into a loser-leaves-town match for Driskel and Brissett. Neither guy was particularly good last year as freshmen and Florida has to replace their schematic advantage of an offensive coordinator this year so they will be learning some new offense as well. The winner of this battle will be forever tied to Will Muschamp and whether or not he’s going to be a success down in Gainesville.
