I don’t want to pile on the Penn State mess here but with the sanctions that have been laid down against them, the players are going to be the ones paying the price and because of that they’ve been given waivers to transfer and play immediately. Couple that with the much publicized attrition that Georgia has had, it would benefit Georgia (as I’m sure it would pretty much any other team) greatly if they could bring in a few players from the Nittany Lions that could make an impact on the team and help fill a need. I know some of these players have said that they will be staying put but that’s the obvious immediate reaction and only time will tell what will happen with these kids. Mark Richt has been open about looking at some of the Penn State players, here are the guys he should focus on.
K Anthony Fera- Fera is on the Lou Groza award watch list for the season. Fera was 14 of 17 last year (compare this with Blair Walsh’s 14 missed field goals from 2011) would be a clear upgrade for Georgia and it would give incoming freshman Marshall Morgan time to get on campus and get comfortable kicking in Sanford Stadium. Fera also punts and can handle kick-offs.
RB Silas Redd- This guy should need no introduction to the average college football fan. Redd was the fourth leading rusher in the Big Ten last year with over 1200 yards and 15 TDs. Redd would give the backfield a boost and provide a solid #1 option. He would be able to come in an compete immediately for a starting position and would help the young freshman get their feet under them before they were thrust into game duty.
OT Donovan Smith- Smith is a redshirt freshman who is looking forward to four straight seasons without a bowl. Georgia has been a bit snake-bitten by offensive linemen recruiting over the last few years. Smith is a four star recruit who Scout.com ranked as the #12 OT in the 2011 recruiting class. If they can’t land the big fish in Smith, Georgia would be wise in trying to land an offensive lineman to help with the amount of bodies that they have and with competition.
CB Stephon Morris- Because of suspensions (or rumored suspensions) for Georgia early in the season they’ve had to move Malcolm Mitchell over from WR to get some practice time at CB. Morris is the best corner on the Penn State roster.
CB Adrian Amos- As a freshman, Amos showed flashes of being a really good player and would be just a sophomore. He can also play safety which might come in handy with Bacarri Rambo and Shawn Williams being seniors.
Another thing Georgia should look at is core special team guys or guys that they think could make an impact on the coverage teams. That was a big sore spot for Georgia last year and anybody who could make that unit better should be recruited.
