I got invited last year to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:
The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.
Here is my week one ballot based on game performance. Feel free to chime in with who you would have voted for based on last weeks performance…
#1 Tyler Tettleton, QB, Ohio
Tettleton quarterbacked the Bobcats to an upset of Penn State. He was 31 of 41 for 324 yards and 2 TD and also had 49 yards rushing and a TD on the ground.
#2 Stefphon Jefferson, RB, Nevada
The Wolfpack surprised Cal in Berkeley and a big reason was Jefferson and his three rushing TDs.
#3 Shaun Rutherford, QB, Texas State
In their first game in the FBS, Rutherford led the Bobcats to an upset of the Houston Cougars. Rutherford was 19 of 25 for 196 yds and 1 TD.
#4 Shawn Southward, RB, Troy
Rushed for 204 yards on 28 carries and scored 3 TD in a 39-29 win over UAB. Also had 3 receptions out of the backfield.
#5 Austin Franklin, WR, New Mexico St
Sure it was just Sacramento State, but if you remember this team upset Oregon State in the opener last year. Franklin caught 8 passes for 236 yards and had 2 TD in the route by the Aggies.
