Week one of the college football season is in the books. Now let’s take a look ahead at what is in store for us in week two and it looks like the majority of intriguing match-ups, at least for me, reside in the SEC. Here are the games you should be watching…
Thursday, Sept 6th
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, 8 PM, ESPN
Pitt fell flat on their face in week one and this is Cincy’s opener. Cincy could be a player in the Big East. This is the only game of note on TV on Thursday so check it out and see if Pitt can bounce back and if the Bearcats have a chance to challenge Louisville in the Big East. Pete has also chosen this as his “Big East Game of the Week“.
Friday, September 7th
Utah at Utah State, 8 PM, ESPN2
This is the only game on this Friday and it’s a good opportunity to take a look at what will probably be USC’s top challenger in the Pac-12 South. The Utes opponents, Utah State, are no joke. Last year they took Auburn to the wire in the season opener, can they replicate that this year against Utah?
Saturday September 8th
Auburn at Mississippi State, Noon, ESPN
Auburn lost a tough game last week to Clemson and now they must travel to Starkville in what will be another tight battle. Last year, the Bulldogs were stuffed on the goaline as they mismanaged the clock against the Tigers. Dan Mullen and crew will be looking at revenge in a critical early season SEC West match-up
A couple of interesting games to check out during commercials will be Penn State/Virginia (ABC, Noon), UCF/Ohio State (Noon, ESPN2) and East Carolina/South Carolina (SEC Network, 12:21 PM)
Florida at Texas A&M, 3:30 PM, ESPN
After last week, Florida should be really nervous about this game. Jeff Driskel has been named the starter, but will that make a difference? The Aggies game got canceled last week so this is their season opener. This might not be the same Florida from a few years ago but it’s still a huge SEC opener for them.
During commercials flip over to UNC/Wake Forest (FSN, 3 PM), Iowa State/Iowa (3:30/BTN) and Purdue/Notre Dame (NBC, 3:30).
Georgia at Missouri, 7:45 PM, ESPN2
Missouri got to beat down a patsy in week one as a warm-up. They host the defending SEC East Champion Georgia Bulldogs in their SEC opener and it should be a good one. Missouri seems to be a bit confident after Georgia struggled at times in their opener. This game pits good QBs in James Franklin and Aaron Murray and a couple of big-time freshmen in Dorial Green Beckham and Todd Gurley. The SEC is putting on some solid week two match-ups and this one looks like the best.
During commercials flip over to Washington/LSU (ESPN, 7 PM) and Nebraska/UCLA (FOX, 7:30 PM).
Illinois at Arizona State, 10:30, ESPN
End the night with what looks to be an offensive showcase. Arizona State scored 63 in their opener and Illinois scored 24 but played much better competition. Both teams have brand new coaches and will be looking for a victory to keep their positive momentum going early in the season.
