I am hosting the Bloguin Heisman Poll again this year over on Crystal Ball Run. Pete and I both have votes and here is how we voted this week:
Is Clowney worth of Heisman consideration?
Pete:
#1 Geno Smith, West Virginia (QB): With the win in Austin, Geno Smith crossed a huge “legitimacy” threshold. He led his team into the crucible of the Big XII and came out with a victory. He came, he saw, he conquered.
#2 Collin Klein, Kansas State (QB): Klein is benefiting from both a year in which there are few standout Heisman candidates and the “Cindarellaness” of K State’s season. Here’s hoping the story ends with a trip to New York in early December.
#3 De’Anthony Thomas, Oregon (QB): Had a touchdown on 75 rushing yards, coupled with 12 receiving yards and 35 return yards last week; perhaps not stunning stats for a would-be Heisman winner, but the expectation of his ability is that a 300-yard, three touchdown game is lying in wait.
#1 Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina (DE): Clowney’s performance last week against Georgia showed that he is without a doubt the most dynamic defensive player in the Nation. In a year where offensive players aren’t really making their mark it only makes sense for a dominant defensive player to be strongly considered for the Heisman.
#2 Geno Smith, West Virginia (QB): So far this season, Geno has been the best offensive player by a pretty wide margin. Of course, last year RGIII was not even in the top three at this point in the season so there is still a lot of football to be played.
#3 Manti T’eo, Notre Dame (LB): T’eo is the best player on Notre Dame and the Irish have made huge improvements over last season. Without T’eo, the Irish simply are not the same team.
