College Football Week Seven Wrap-Up

Home Sweet Home

It’s amazing how teams can look completely different on the road than they do at home but that’s the case with LSU the last two weeks. On the road against Florida they managed just six points and 200 total yards. At home in their friendly confines they put up over 400 yards and 23 points against a South Carolina team that looked like world beaters last week at home against Georgia. LSU’s victory puts Florida in the driver’s seat in the SEC East and Florida will be at home next week against the Gamecocks.

Luck of the Irish

The fact that Notre Dame put themselves in position to win their game against Stanford wasn’t lucky. The lucky part was the referee calling Stefpan Taylor down before he reached the end zone on a fourth down run where he appeared to stay off the ground and keep his legs moving as he broke the plane of the goal line with the football. It was one of those plays that was tough to reverse based on the call that was made on the field and that’s lucky for Notre Dame because they had players celebrating the stop as Taylor was still in motion towards the goal line.

The Biggest Losers

Two teams just got trounced on Saturday and they were West Virginia and Texas. We all knew West Virginia’s defense wasn’t any good and the Red Raiders exposed them for 49 points on 676 yards. What changed in this game was that the Texas Tech defense didn’t give up the backbreaking huge plays that the Moutaineers have become known for this season.

Just when you think Texas is back, it’s proved that they aren’t even in the ballpark. Not only did Texas lose but they got embarrassed by rival Oklahoma. OU went up 35-2 at half-time and finished Texas off 63-21.

Biggest Winner

Despite getting a bit “lucky”, I think it’s fair to say that none of us thought the Irish would be undefeated at this point in the season. Half-way through their season, that’s where Notre Dame is and they’ve done so against a decent schedule. Sure the schedule isn’t as tough as originally thought (Michigan and Michigan State are down versus expectations) but they’ve won every game in front of them. Circle October 27th on your calendar as that’s when the Irish travel to play Oklahoma.

We’re Back

I’ve said since the pre-season that the Big 12 was going to beat each other up this year and that’s exactly what has happened so far as only Kansas State remains unbeaten. OU bounced back from their loss to K-State earlier this year when they trounced the Longhorns this weekend. OU is back and if they can run the table….who knows.

Best Individual Performance

There were a lot of great performances this weekend and not to overlook Seth Doege but I’m going with Wisconsin‘s Montee Ball. Ball went from Heisman candidate to also ran this year as he’s struggled in the biggest games. At Purdue on Saturday, Ball broke out with 247 yards on 29 carries and 3 TDs.
