I got invited last year to take part in our friend Kyle Kensing’s “Detmer Award” over at Saturday Blitz. What exactly is the “Detmer Award”? Here is how he describes it:
The five non-BCS conferences and 75 percent of the independents are differentiated from the Big Six in virtually every other facet, so it only makes sense the best players from this subdivision-subdivision have an award for its best player. Just as fitting is for this honor to bear the name of the last player from one of these universities to win college football’s top honor, 1990 Heisman winner and BYU quarterback Ty Detmer. SaturdayBlitz.com will track this completely exclusive field’s progress throughout the season.
Here is my week seven ballot based on game performance. Feel free to chime in with who you would have voted for based on last weeks performance…
#1 Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech– caught 21 passes for 233 yards and 4 TDs in a losing effort to Texas A&M. Helped to give his team a chance at the end of the game by taking a short pass for a 62 yard TD with less than three minutes left in the game.
#2 Colby Cameron, Louisiana Tech– Threw for 450 yards on 44/58 for 5 TD. He threw TD passes with 1:46 and 0:33 on the clock to pull within two points of Texas A&M.
#3 Chuckie Keaton, Utah State– Helped his team win on the road against San Jose State as he threw for 273 yards and three TDs and added 47 yards rushing and a TD.
#4 Benny Cunningham, Middle Tennessee– Had two second half TD runs and 230 total yards rushing with four receptions as he helped his team beat FIU.
#5 Dri Archer, Kent State– Archer continued to have an impact in multiple ways this week. He had 222 yards rushing on 12 carries with a long of 87. He also tossed a 24 yard TD pass on his only attempt.
