Last week saw Alabama almost fall to LSU and Notre Dame almost fall to Pitt. While those teams “almost” lost, nobody in the top ten fell to a lower ranked opponent. Will this week be different? Overall, this week looks a little disappointing on paper but sometimes that’s when the crazy stuff happens. Here are the games you should be watching this week….
Wednesday, November 7th
Bowling Green (6-3, 4-1) at Ohio (8-1, 4-1), 8 PM, ESPN 2
It’s mid-week #MACtion time! First up is a Tuesday night game with Ball State facing Toledo and then it’s on to Bowling Green at Ohio. This game would have been a bit more intriguing if Ohio hadn’t lost a couple of weeks ago to Miami (Ohio) but this one still will be fun. Watch to see how many times the announcer refer to Tyler Tettleton’s father, Mickey Tettleton and watch to see which team sets themselves up to challenge Kent State in the MAC East.
Thursday, November 8th
Louisiana-Monroe (6-3, 4-1) at Arkansas State (6-3, 4-1), 7 PM, ESPNU
There is another game in this timeslot that has much bigger named teams, FSU/Virginia Tech. But let’s face it, Virginia Tech is down this year and I would expect FSU to roll in that one. If you want to watch a closer and quite frankly a more exciting game then keep an eye on this one. On one side you have the man that took Auburn’s offense with him, Gus Malzahn, and on the other side you have Kolton Browning. The winner of this game sets atop the Sun Belt conference awaiting the Georgia Tech killer, Middle Tennessee.
Saturday, November 10th
Wisconsin (6-3, 3-2) at Indiana (4-5, 2-3), Noon, ESPN2
Indiana has games left against Wisconsin, Purdue and Penn State. Due to the sanctions against Ohio State and Penn State, Indiana controls it’s own destiny in the Big Ten Leaders division. Yep, you just read that. How awesome would it be to see Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game in a season in which they lost to Navy and Ball State. To answer my own question, it would be very awesome. So watch and cheer on the Hoosiers as they try to get bowl eligible for the first time since your grandpa’s grandpa was just an afterthought in his mother’s belly. If this isn’t for you then watch South Carolina/Arkansas. Steve Spurrier was deathly afraid of that game before the season started. Now, not so much. Northwestern/Michigan and Louisville/Syracuse are also available for your viewing enjoyment.
Texas A&M (7-2, 4-2) at Alabama (9-0, 6-0), 3:30 PM, CBS
Alabama survived last week in a hard fought contest against Les Miles and the LSU Tigers. Bama now returns home to their friendly confines but they must face one of the most surprising and dynamic teams in the SEC. Led by Johnny Football, the Aggies have outperformed expectations and they would like nothing more than to shock Nick Saban and his little buddy Kirby. The Irresistible Force (A&M is scoring an SEC best 44.7 ppg) meets the Immovable Object (Bama’s defense gives up just 9.1 ppg). Watch to see which one gives. Also available in this time slot: Oregon State/Stanford and Penn State/Nebraska.
Kansas State (9-0, 6-0) at TCU (6-3, 3-3), 7 PM, FOX
The night games don’t have that oomph of the last few weeks but sometimes that’s when you need to watch out. Was Collin Klein concussed last week or wasn’t he? Sure seems like he was but Bill Snyder isn’t playing it that way in the media. It’s all hands on deck for Kansas State as they fight to remain in the National Title picture against a TCU team that has persevered through some difficult times this season. Also available: Notre Dame/Boston College, Mississippi State/LSU and Auburn/Georgia.
UCLA (7-2, 4-2) at Washington State (2-7, 0-6), 10:30 PM, ESPN2
It’s a Pac-12 night-cap and after UCLA poured some sugar (and a beatdown) on Arizona last week I’m interested to see how they come out on the road in Pullman. Mike Leach’s team has been disappointing this season but he’s usually good for an upset when you least expect it. Keep an eye on this one and see if Mike Leach can pull the upset and Jim L Mora can pull a nutty. Also available in this timeslot: Oregon/Cal (blowout…cough…blowout), Utah/Washington and Fresno State/Nevada.
