I know we already talked about Aaron Murray once this week but I came across an interesting link and thought I would share it. I've recently started to follow Chris Brown's great site Smart Football. Occasionally Chris shoots out some links posts and today he made one that linked to a site called Football Perspective. In this link, Football Perspective took a look at the best passing seasons since 2005. Who do you think was the best QB in 2012 based on their criteria?
If you guessed Aaron Murray then you are right. The list has three former Heisman winners (Tebow- 2007, Bradford- 2008, RG3- 2011) in the top five so it definitely has some validity.
Overall, Aaron Murray's 2012 season ranked as the #8 overall season since 2005. Not bad for a guy that "can't win the big one." When you look at Aaron Murray he took some really good steps forward in 2012. He had the highest completion percentage of his career (3.4% over 2010), he threw for over 700 more yards than any previous season and he had more completions than any other season with less attempts than 2011.
But maybe the biggest step he took was the willingness and ability to throw the deep ball. Murray's yards per attempt came in at the highest in the country last season (10.1). Georgia had the most passing plays of over 40 yards in the SEC (they had 20 with their closest competition having 15) and they were second in the Nation in this metric behind only Baylor.
Murray and Georgia were also much better on third down as they converted 4.83% more in 2012 than they did in 2011. An improved running game and offensive line definitely helped Murray and both of those units should continue to improve this year for Georgia.
Murray and the Georgia Bulldogs came as close as you can from beating Alabama in the SEC title game and heading to the National Championship Game in 2012. Can they take the next step in 2013 with the offense taking center stage as the defense reloads with young talent?
