This was the season opener for both of these schools as Pitt hosted the Penguins of Youngstown State. Pitt was coming off of a 6-7 season in which head coach Todd Graham high tailed it out of Heinz Field faster than you can say bad hire. The Penguins finished 2011 at 6-5 including a 28-6 loss to Michigan State.
Paul Chryst's first game as head coach for Pitt turned out to be one he would like to forget. The Penguins showed they were here to play when they struck first on a 27 yard TD pass in the first quarter. Youngstown State took a 14-10 lead into halftime and from there it was all about the Penguins as they scored the first two touchdowns in the second half to open up an 18 point lead.
The only good news for Pitt is that it would get better. In fact, if you've been keeping up with our upset countdown you'd know that they made the list when they upset Virginia Tech. It was a weird year for Pitt but they got better as the season went on and pulled off another upset later in the season when they beat up on a 9-1 Rutgers squad.
