We are still months away from college football season but admit it, you are thinking about that first Saturday and the weeks that follow. You are wondering about the match-ups, letting them play through your mind and trying to figure out just how good your team is going to be this season.
Kevin McGuire of No2MinuteWarning.com, Crystal Ball Run and Nittany Lions Den and Andrew Coppens of Madtown Badgers and the B1G Time joined me again to talk about which games they are looking the most forward to at the beginning of the season….
Kevin McGuire: The Alabama-Texas A&M game is the game of the month of September for my money, but I think there are a couple other games well worth paying attention to. Right off the bat, Georgia and Clemson could be a dandy, with Georgia looking again like a potential SEC champion and Clemson certainly always going to be in the mix in the ACC. Georgia’s week two game against South Carolina should be another good one as well. Could the Bulldogs start 0-2 against the state of South Carolina? Also, Miami vs. Florida? Yes please.
Andrew Coppens: There are a number of games that could be important in the first few weeks, but there are five that I’ll be really keeping an eye on for various reasons. Those games are LSU vs. TCU (TCU held there own in the Big 12 last year, can it take down a regrouping LSU squad and set a marker for the rest of the Big 12?), Colorado vs. Colorado Sate (rivalry and new regime in Boulder – important to get off on right foot), Northwestern at Cal (debut of BearRaid is going to test what is supposed to be a better secondary for NU. Plus the Wildcats have big ambitions this season & the B1G doesn’t do well out west historically – all that makes this a game to watch), Texas at BYU in week two (Mac hasn’t exactly gotten this Texas team back to it’s promised level and BYU is going to be a heck of a test, especially at home), and finally Florida vs. Miami (FL) (Do I really need to explain why this is on the list?).
Kevin: The “other” Kevin stole my thunder a bit with Georgia/Clemson. Not only is this a game that will pit likely top ten teams against each other in week one, it’s also a rivalry game that hasn’t been played since 2003. Oh yeah, did I forget the offensive weapons that will be on display? Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall, Malcolm Mitchell, Tajh Boyd, Sammy Watkins. Where do I sign up?
A non-SEC match-up that has me really interested in week two is Notre Dame/Michigan. With the recent suspension (or whatever you want to call it) of Everett Golston where will Notre Dame turn at QB? Both of these schools have recently been down but now they are back as fixtures in the polls and the last two games between the two of them have been very close. This game will be a catalyst for one team, which one will it be? All eyes are on Ohio State in B1G land but the Wolverines have a workable schedule.
