Bill Goldberg went to Georgia because of a bottle of Wild Turkey?

cupmuck

You probably know Bill Goldberg as the professional wrestler who burst onto the scene in the late 90s spearing and jackhammering everybody in sight. What you might not remember is that he was once an All-SEC defensive lineman for the University of Georgia.

Goldberg was on Jim Ross’s Ross Report podcast this week and the two had some interesting reflections of Bill’s college football days including his recruitment.

In terms of college football they touch on….

– The one place he wanted to go on a recruiting trip to but didn’t (USC)

– Why Goldberg was thinking of going to Texas but decided not to.

– The fact that Goldberg would have played anywhere for Barry Switzer except Oklahoma (he wanted to get out of state and make a name for himself).

– Barry Switzer’s drink of choice when recruiting Goldberg (Crown on the rocks)

So why did he choose Georgia?

Goldberg told Jim that his uncle, who lived in Jacksonville, suggested Georgia because he thought highly of Vince Dooley. Add in that the Georgia defense in that era was known as the “Junkyard Dawgs” and played a violent style of football. That must have been it, right? Apparently, it was a bottle of Wild Turkey that was handed to him when he was standing on top of a bar on his recruiting trip that sealed the deal. Ah, recruiting stories….

If you want to listen to the full episode, which includes a little college football at the beginning and also some interesting stuff from when Bill (and Jim as well as he served as a play-by-play guy for a year or so) was a member of the Atlanta Falcons on Deion Sanders, Andre Rison and others click here to head over to the Ross Report.
