Eagles to Sign Byron Maxwell

Big East

After weeks of speculation that the Eagles secondary would be totally revamped, we’re starting to see these rumors come to fruition.  With Cary Williams being cut, Nate Allen and Bradley Fletcher being free agents, the Eagles needed to fill three starting spots in the secondary.  On Saturday, it seems like they filled the first hole in a very big way.  According to multiple sources, the Eagles have agreed on a 5 year, 54+ million deal with 25 mil guaranteed.

We’ve known from the beginning that the Eagles were going to be serious players for some of the top tier free agents.  Maxwell was widely regarded as the top cornerback on the board and the Eagles didn’t shy away from making a prompt and aggressive play for the former L.O.B. member.  Now that the Eagles have fixed up one piece of the secondary, they’ve got to switch their attention to the safety position.  It’s clear that they want to pry Devin McCourty from New England, but will it be that easy?  McCourty will reportedly seek 9+ million per season on the open market.  McCourty would give the Eagles the versatility they covet, as well as a playmaking safety that they haven’t been able to land since losing Brian Dawkins.  McCourty, who played corner at Rugers, would be able to give Billy Davis a plethora of options.

For those of you who are skeptical about this signing because of the “Dream Team”, don’t be.  Maxwell is a proven corner who has been tested quite often over the past 2 seasons.  He can line up inside on a slot receiver, or outside on a flanker.  Maxwell can also play press man coverage, which is what Billy Davis covets so that he’s able to blitz more often and aggressively.  Maxwell comes from a winning locker room and winning “culture” in Seattle.  Chip has a vision and that vision is starting to come together, stay tuned folks!
