The Red Sox just acquired starting pitcher Daniel Haigwood from the Texas Rangers for minor leaguer Scott Shoemaker and cash. This is Haigwood’s fourth organization. Last year, he was traded from the Chicago White Sox to Philadelphia Phillies in the Jim Thome trade. Later, Haigwood was spun to the Texas Rangers for Fabio Castro.
Haigwood, 23, possesses a 90-mph fastball, a curveball, a slurve and a very good changeup. He is a cerebral pitcher with good movement and also throws left-handed.
Last year, he played for two Double-A teams. For AA Reading (Philadelphia), he had a 2-5 record and 3.54 ERA in 84.0 IP, starting 15 games. For Texas’ AA Frisco club, he started 12 games, going 1-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 62.0 IP. The year previous, for the White Sox’s AA club, he had a 1.74 ERA in 11 games started for a 6-1 record, this after being promoted from A Winston-Salem, where he went 8-2 with a 3.77 ERA in 15 GS. Haigwood’s K/9 for his minor league career is 8.94. His BB/9 is 4.37. To have a shot in the majors, he needs to tighten up his control, but Rotoworld.com says he has potential as a career fourth or fifth starter. He has yet to play this year.
Shoemaker is 25 years old, and in 3.1 IP of relief for AA Portland, he had a 10.80 ERA. That is Scott Shoemaker in a nutshell. It looks as if the cash was more important to the Rangers, although Shoemaker did have a decent 4.05 ERA in 73.1 IP for High-A Wilmington last year, starting eight games and relieving in 15, and saw time in AA Portland and AAA Pawtucket as well.
