My Open Letter Ruben Amaro Jr.

Dear Mr. Amaro,

I write you this letter as a former season ticket holder and lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan who has become increasingly incensed with the lack of direction this organization has.  As someone who works 50-60 hours a week in order to pay my mortgage, car payment, and bills, I hate to request someone lose their job, but I request that you tender your resignation immediately.

I didn’t complain when you traded and gutted our farm system for players like Roy Halladay, Hunter Pence, or Roy Oswalt.  You saw a window for this team to win another World Series, and you went for it.  I understand that Jayson Werth received a much more lucrative offer from the Washington Nationals and we didn’t have the money to keep all of our pieces intact.  I refuse to rip your judgement on trying to extend Ryan Howard’s contract before it was necessary, you saw where the first baseman market was going and you tried to get ahead of the curve.  Even though I wasn’t in love with the deal when it happened, the Jonathan Papelbon signing isn’t why I’m calling for this resignation.

Mr. Amaro, the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, the first championship that the city of Philadelphia had seen in 25 years.  The organization has steadily declined ever since, a World Series appearance in 2009, an NLCS appearance in 2010, an NLDS in 2011, a .500 season in 2012, and then back to back 89 loss seasons in 2013 and 2014.  Citizen’s Bank has gone from the “place to be”, to the “place to avoid”.

Athletes like Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Carlos Ruiz should be celebrated and toasted in this town.  Instead, they were forced to endure a 3 year (some going on 4 year) death march where they’ve been booed by fans and given no legitimate chance to win.  The fact that Ryan Howard, the man who was an MLB MVP and cornerstone to this franchise, has been alienated and ostracized to the point where he is booed and openly discussed about being traded and/or released is downright shameful.

Between the lack of talent you’ve been able to acquire to help this roster contend on a major league level, your lack of ability to draft and develop young talent, the irresponsible contracts, and the blatant middle finger you’ve given to some of the heralded veterans on this roster is simply absurd.  I’m sure you would be able to find another suitable position in the organization, or in baseball.  However, you’ve proven that you’re unable to perform the duties of the Philadelphia Phillies’ General Manager adequately.

Sincerely,

Keith Carman (And I’m sure most other Phillies fans)
