Multiple sources have confirmed that Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg has stepped down.

Sandberg, speaking to reporters in a press conference, cited impending leadership changes as a major factor in his decision. The Phillies have been speculated by national and local media to announce the hiring of veteran baseball executive Andy MacPhail soon. He said he didn’t want to get in the way of what the impending changes in management would include.

In addition, it seems that Ryno was just flat out sick of the losses piling up. Who can blame him? Sandberg said, ” The accumulation of losses was something that I take responsibility for and something that really took a toll on me.”

Ryne Sandberg was 119-159 in his 2 plus seasons as Phillies manager.

Pete Mackanin has been named interim manager.

Ryne Sandberg has insisted that his resignation was all his doing. Sandberg was not fired.

According to reports, Ruben Amaro and Phillies management were taken off guard by Sandberg’s resignation. He reportedly informed them of his decision when he arrived at Citizens Bank Park this morning.
