Penn State Recap #2: Buffalo

tpboxscore

Final score: Penn State 27, Buffalo 14.

Well, a win’s a win. It doesn’t have to look good for it to go down in the books as a dub.

Offense: At halftime Penn State was up 10-0. The Nittany Lions only really had 1 good offensive drive in the first half. DeAndre Thompkins had several good punt returns, including one that went for over 50 yards. Brandon Polk had a pair of really nice jet sweeps, one of which went for the sole first half touchdown. Saquon Barkley’s coming out party arrived in the 2nd half, and so did the Penn State offense. The true freshman rushed for over 100 yards. Barkley hurdled over a defender en route to a big 17 yard gain in the second half. The big news from the offense is that stud offensive lineman Andrew Nelson got injured during the game. We will keep you updated on his status.

Defense: Aside from 2 drives, the defense looked good. They dominated throughout the game, as they only gave up 14 points. The defensive line was fantastic Nassib, Johnson, Zettel, and Sickels all played extremely well. They sacked the quarterback 5 times. Nassib seemed to have his name called every play. Johnson had his career high for tackles in a game. These guys all really showed up to play.

3 Takeaways:

1. Saquon Barkley is the real deal.

2. The offensive line played exellently. They gave up 0 sacks today.

3. The special teams unit is much improved this year. This year Thompkins gives the Nittany Lions an explosive return man. The ST unit has many hard hitting blockers. Joey Julius will have a solid year kicking field goals, and does a very good job sending the ball deep into the endzone on kickoffs.
