On Wednesday night the Philadelphia Flyers announced they traded Luke Schenn and Vincent Lecavalier to the Los Angeles Kings for Jordan Weal and a third round pick in this years draft. This was a very smart trade by Ron Hextall. The Flyers will retain 50 percent of both contracts which is $2.25 million of Vinny’s contract and $1.8 million of Schenn.
Overall the Flyers gain another $4 million in cap space after this trade. Another thing that has been noted is that Lecavalier has told the Kings he is planning on retiring after this year, which means what the Flyers owe him will be erased. Also after this season Luke Schenn will be a free agent so what the Flyers will owe him on the portion of his contract they retained in the trade will also come off the Flyers cap. This trade is once again another great trade by the Flyers and frees up some much needed cap space.

Now about the guy the Flyers received back in the trade, Jordan Weal. He is 23 years old and is in his first NHL season. Last season he played for the Kings AHL affiliate the Manchester Monarchs. He racked up 69 points in 73 regular season games and was named to the AHL All-Star team. He also helped lead the Monarchs to the Calder Cup and won the championship with them while racking up 22 points in 19 playoffs games. He was named the Calder Cup MVP. So far he has played 10 games for the Kings with no points. The Flyers will be giving him another shot to prove himself at the NHL level as they are not sending him down to the AHL. When he gets his chance, look for him to make the most of it.
