ESPN Ombudsman Blasts SportsCenter Specials

In her latest column, ESPN Ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber comes out against the Alleged Worldwide Leader for its extended and bloated SportsCenter specials, especially the coverage of Spygate. Because the coverage of the release of the tapes was so long, Schreiber says there was little to no new information and it was Trey Wingo, Cris Carter and Mark Schelereth bantering back and forth going over the top with their commentary.

For an hour and 15 minutes preceding the Goodell news conference, this “SportsCenter Special” was a runaway train of inflammatory speculation that had Schlereth and Carter placing asterisks on all the Patriots’ Super Bowl wins under Belichick.

And Schreiber says because of the over the top coverage, fans have come to mistrust ESPN. She wondered where were the calmer heads during the SportsCenter special saying usually dependable John Clayton and Sal Paolantonio also caught the Spygate fever by going over the top.

Overall, Schreiber did not see any balance in ESPN’s coverage and felt that Spygate was an example of an unlevel playing field.
