I haven’t touched on Ohio State basketball this season. Yes, I do regret that (I think I need to bring on another writer to The BBC, frankly) but I also must admit that I haven’t had the time to catch more than half of the Buckeyes basketball games this season.
But tonight was different. Michigan was in town.
As you all know, Ohio State has owned the Wolverines since 2003. We’re on six years of pure domination in all the major sports, and it’s been FUN. But Michigan has discovered a resurgence of success in the basketball arena, and was 13-3 and ranked just a couple of weeks ago. When the Buckeyes visited Ann Arbor 11 days ago, Crisler Arena was buzzing with thoughts of revenge. I think they even brought some football players onto the court pre-game to fire up the crowd. Yeah, that didn’t work. I’m pretty sure nobody on the football team has any experience beating Ohio State either.
So the Wolverines dreams of revenge would have to wait for tonight in Columbus, Ohio. Would the maize and blue find a way to end the domination at the hands of Ohio State?
Nope.
Nada.
Niente.
Fail.
Ohio State kicked the doors in early and never looked back while winning 72-54. Michigan shot 0-11 from 3-point range in the first half and never recovered. The Bucks kept a 10-18 point lead the entire night.
Since December 2003, Ohio State has a 22-1 record against Michigan in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. Yeah, that’s domination. And by the way, the Lady Buckeyes play Michigan Thursday night.
T-minus 10 seconds before some lame Michigan fan steps in, claiming that the Blue leads the overall football record. Good luck to you sir, savoring those wins from 109 years ago. Gotta do better than that.
Towards the end of tonights game, Michigan’s futility was highlighted by Wolverine player Zack Novak, who fired an elbow at the head of P.J. Hill during a free-throw attempt with less than 2 minutes to play. Novak was ejected from the game for a flagrant foul and practically raced into the locker room to protect his little ass from the scarlet and gray crowd. Replays confirmed Novak’s cheap shot was intentional, and he might wanna not answer the phone when the Big Ten calls him tomorrow afternoon for a little chat.
Ohio State now stands at 14-5 with a decent shot at the NCAA tournament. It’s going to take a nice stretch run, but I think we can get the 21-22 wins needed. We have 11 games left, then the Big Ten Tourney to help with an extra win or two.
