Trade deadline day came and left with the Spurs standing pat once again.
Several media outlets reported that they were very close to reaching a deal for Marcus Camby, and they may have also traded for Vince Carter or Richard Jefferson if not for their unwillingness to part with Roger Mason and George Hill.
But with the Kings waiving Mikki Moore, since they were unable to trade him, the Spurs may be on a short list of suitors for the veteran big man’s services.
Moore was in Spurs training camp about 6-8 years ago and was among the final cuts that did not make the opening night roster, but Pop liked Moore’s work ethic and Tim Duncan has also had nice words for Moore.
I can see Pop and R.C. Buford trying to sign Moore to shore up the frontcourt. He had his best year with the Nets in 2006-07, but his minutes have been limited with the Kings, playing behind Brad Miller and Jason Thompson.
If Moore doesn’t work out or gets picked up elsewhere, former Maverick Pops Mensah-Bonsu was signed by the Austin Toros recently and has taken the D-League by storm since. He’s averaging 25 points, 12 rebounds and just under three blocks a game.
The Spurs might think about taking a look at Mensah-Bonsu, especially since it’s such a low risk and they can always send him back to Austin. I wouldn’t expect his Toros numbers for the Spurs, but if he can score some easy clean-up points, consistently board and get maybe a block a game, he could possibly take Ian Mahinmi’s spot until he recovers from his never-ending ankle injury.
