Ater Majok To Withdraw Name From 2009 NBA Draft

According to Mike Anthony of the Hartford Courant, who spoke with UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, freshman Ater Majok will be withdrawing his name from consideration for the 2009 NBA Draft.

Ater Majok“He’s not going to go into the draft, but I don’t know what, beyond that, he’ll do. I talked to him [Friday]. He’s going to do whatever he feels he needs to do. It’s not much more complex than that. I don’t think he’ll go home. I think it’s either [UConn] or Europe. I’m not trying to [get a feel for which way he’s leaning]. The other kids are coming to join our program. You have to want to join our program. And I think Ater does, but he has a lot of responsibilities.”

Majok was a partial qualifier for the Huskies and would have to sit out the first semester should he decide to stay at UConn. He was definitely not going to get drafted by any NBA team and you have to wonder if like Calhoun says he’ll go to Europe.

Majok would definitely be better served staying at UConn in my opinion if he wants to play in the NBA. Calhoun is one of the best college coaches out there and his track record of putting players in the NBA speaks for itself. He can only make Majok a better basketball player.

If Majok goes to Europe, it could end up hurting him if he wants to get to the NBA with the style of play being different than in the NBA. But with him needing the money for his family, it will be interesting to see what he ends up deciding to do.

This will definitely be something to follow before the first semester starts at UConn in late August.
