2009 Spurs Training Camp Profile: Marcus Williams

It’s hard to believe training camp is already here and the beginning of the Spurs 2009-2010 season is closing in fast.

Project Spurs kicks off training camp with a few profiles on some players trying to earn a spot on the Spurs roster.  We begin with Marcus Williams.

Height: 6’7″
Weight: 207 lbs.
College: Arizona
Position: Small Forward
Draft: San Antonio Spurs. 33rd overall, 2007

To say this is it is an understatement for Williams.  He has to show he is ready for the NBA during this training camp since he cannot go back to the D-League anymore per NBA/NBDL rules.

What he has shown is he may not be ready at all for the NBA.  He has been in and out of the Spurs lineup averaging 2 points per game as a Spur before being waived on October 2007.  He has played with the Clippers during the 2007-2008 NBA season averaged 1 point per game in 10 games and played with the Toros for a good part of his career and even was waived by the Toros at one point.

While with the Toros, he showed he can put up the numbers (averaged 27.5 points at one point) and even received accolades while in the NBDL such as the Performer of the Week.  But in summer leagues with the Spurs and in playing time in a Spurs jersey, he fizzles out.  I am not here to bash the guy, on the other hand I hope he makes the squad.  Besides, after two years with the Toros and developing under the “Spurs system” Toros’ coach Snyder instills, he has a great shot at making the team.

However realistically speaking, with the Spurs adding Keith Bogans and other shooting guards already in the fold (Manu, Finley, Hairston, and Mason) the odds are stacked against him in making the Spurs team.  His best option may be to be the Spurs 3rd backup point guard.
