Ohio State leapfrogs Cinci, moves to #7

Well, well, I guess Cincinnati is no longer “the best team in Ohio”, are they?

The Associated Press poll has been released, and Ohio State has rightfully reclaimed their lead over the Bearcats. Last week, the Buckeyes watched Cincinnati jump over them following a win over 0-5 Miami (OH), sparking outrage over the reality-based part of the state.

Ohio State moved from #9 to #7, as LSU fell to #10 after their weak performance against Florida. The Tigers gained only 162 yards of offense in a 13-3 loss, and the poll voters made them pay for it.

Florida remained #1, but Alabama jumped to #2 after Texas struggled against a very weak Colorado squad. The Longhorns won the game 38-14, but trailed at the half. For reference sake, Colorado allowed 624 yards to Toledo earlier this year in a 52-38 loss to the Rockets. Texas needing a come-from-behind win in the second half warranted a drop in the polls, and they slipped to #3.

Virginia Tech, fresh off a curbstomping of BC, moved to #4, Boise State is at #5 and USC is #6.

Cincinnati is still in a close race with Ohio State, a mere 10 poll points back. The question remains….why? Their victories have come against;

  • A middle-of-the-pack Big East team (Rutgers)
  • A horrible 1-AA school (SE Mo State, whose only win was against Quincy)
  • A middle-of-the-pack Pac Ten team (Oregon State)
  • A below-average Fresno State team (2-3, beating only UC Davis and Hawaii)
  • The worst team in the MAC (Miami, who is now 0-6)

Why the AP is in love with this team, I have no idea.
