After a cursory perusal of about a dozen preseason NBA magazines and Web sites, I can tell you that nine of 10 experts — not to mention podiatrists, Wall Street stock traders, plumbers and entomologists — believe the Indiana Pacers will miss the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year.
That doesn’t surprise me.
But this might surprise you:
I think they’re going to make the postseason.
At the very least, they’re going to be a .500 basketball team. They will finish 41-41 and — assuming that’s good enough for the seventh or eighth spot in the East — they’re going to be in.
The past three years at this time, I’ve gone out on a limb — a small but still shaky limb –and told you the Pacers had zero chance of making the playoffs.
That changes, here and now.
The Pacers will be one of this year’s pleasant surprises.
Please, Pacers. I want to come back. I want to be a fan again. I miss you. Give me something to care about. All I need is an excuse.
