Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts
The official NFL rankings list Houston’s defense as 16th, based on yards per game. Football Outsiders DVOA ratings list Houston’s defense as 28th. Why the big difference? Three reasons:
1. Field position: Houston opponents begin their average drive more than 74 yards away from the end zone. No defense gets to work with longer fields.
2. Luck: Our research shows that fumble recovery is almost entirely random, and Houston’s defense has recovered seven out of nine opponent fumbles.
3. Opponents: The average offensive DVOA of Houston’s eight opponents so far ranks 30th in the NFL, which could mean a rude awakening against the Colts.
