Carroll worked as an insurance consultant, but his father, also named William, is an athletic trainer — he worked for the Indianapolis Racers hockey team in 1973-74 — so friends in Carroll’s fantasy league would ask him about injuries. He realized there were almost no sources of information on them and began a free e-mail newsletter called Under the Knife in 2002.
Late that season, Carroll — who moved around growing up but returned to Indianapolis in 1996 for work, met his wife and settled on the Eastside — was listening to the “Tony Kornheiser Show” in his car when he heard Gammons mention Under the Knife.
“I almost drove into a pole; it could have ended right there,” Carroll said. “I thought, ‘Holy crap, this might work.’ Every time I see Gammons, I want to hand him money. (ESPN.com’s) Rob Neyer (also) made me his link of the week, and that exploded. It kept growing and growing and growing
